I understand that they want their users to have the latest versions at all time but sometimes it just isn't the "right" time to update..

You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue. Thanks for this; the updater is doubly annoying since if I DO try to run it, it tells me it can't be run, and that I need to totally reinstall Acrobat. But there was not. I'm referring to that column on the right-hand side of the interface.
I just deleted the file updater.api from C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\plug_ins and it worked.
